CanKids.KidsCan, is a family support group for children
with cancer and their families. We are a unit of the
Indian Cancer Society, Delhi Branch, which in turn is a
branch of the Indian Cancer Society, headquartered in
Mumbai. We are members of the International
Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parents Organizations
(ICCCPO) from whom we take our guidelines and have
developed our mission statement.

Our Activities |
| |
| |
|
Care, guidance and facilitation - from moment of
diagnosis through treatment and after- about the
disease, treatment, side effects, availability of
services, and other issues. |
|
|
| |
|
Financial Assistance - medical (for treatment) and
educational, and facilitation for raising funds. |
|
| |
|
Activities - children's programs at hospitals, field
trips, parties, picnics, toy and book bank, and at
the CanKids Haven- an educational and recreational
centre |

|
Reintegration into Society - education, skill
building and employment opportunities. |
|
|
| |
|
Education - tuitions, books, funding, resource
teaching etc.. during treatment and to get back to
school. |

Evaluations and Counseling - evaluation and testing;
counseling - psychological, educational and
palliative; resourcing. |

Groups - for parents, siblings, teenagers and young

PRESENT SCENARIO: |
| We commenced
operations in Jan 2004, and so far are working
in AIIMS, Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital,
Rajiv Gandhi and Apollo Cancer Institute. We
also run a CanKids Haven, as an Educational
Recreational Centre. We offer medical
assistance, educational assistance, run
activity and education programs for the
children, take them on outings, celebrate
birthdays, and other emotional support,
information and guidance from moment of
diagnosis through treatment and after, to the
child and their families. To date we have
interacted with over 2000 children and their
(~10000 people affected by cancer), offered
medical assistance to over 650 children for
their treatment and educational assistance to
over 130 children to encourage them to continue
with their education as soon a their treatment
permits them. |

FUTURE PLANS: |

|
At
present all our activities are in Delhi, but we hope
to grow to a national level organization helping and
enabling any child with cancer and the family,
anywhere in the country. We encourage parents to set
up CanKids units in other states, with a view to
spreading the message that Childhood Cancer is
curable. |

Meanwhile, by early next year we plan to start a
Bereavement and Palliative Counseling Clinic and a
Home -Away -from Home for families who come from
outside Delhi for the long and arduous treatment and
have no where to stay. |
